EXPLORA
Near Space Balloon Camp
Soaring into STEM: Near Space Balloon Camp
Take on a real-world engineering challenge by designing, launching, and analyzing a high-altitude balloon experiment that travels to near space. Work in teams to build payloads, explore how sensors and tracking systems work, and study data collected during flight. Practice problem solving, collaboration, and data analysis while making connections to real STEM careers in New Mexico. This hands-on camp is ideal for curious learners ready to explore science above the clouds.
This camp is offered in partnership with ScienceHeads.org and Sandia National Laboratories.
About the Camp
This Near Space Balloon Camp came about when the partner organization, the New Mexico Chapter of Science Heads Inc, was established in 2024 with a goal of accomplishing some high altitude solar balloon experiments, launches, and recoveries in the Albuquerque Metro area. The first Explora Balloon Camp was offered in 2024.
One of HDARC's missions is Youth Outreach. This year the club was invited by the EXPLORA Museum to participate in the Balloon Camp to teach the participants how radio helps them track their balloon payload. Several transmitting stations were set up and the youths were encouraged to chat over the radios with other folks. Club members had them chatting with other people in the USA.
